Church History

Christ Church dates from 1789, when it was built by the Ladies of the Manor of Alsager, Mary, Margaret and Judith Alsager. It was built as a chapel to Barthomley. In 1889 the centenary of the consecration was celebrated with a special service which included the dedication of a new organ. The original quarter acre burial ground, which dated from 1789, was extended in 1877, and again in 1935 and 1978. It was not until 1946 that Christ Church was finally given parochial status. It was in 1952 that St. Luke's, Oakhanger, was formally linked to Christ Church, Alsager.

Registers of baptisms for 1789-1889, marriages from 1852-1868, burials from 1789-1908, and monumental inscriptions are kept at the Cheshire Records Office.

Those interested in finding out more about the history of Christ Church are recommended to read "Christ Church Alsager 1789-1989" by R. Anelay, copies of which are available from the church.
